YMJSC_copyIn Pasadena, at a conference in 2006, I was casually asked if I would be attending the Young Messianic Jewish Scholars Conference, being organized by Yachad, in NYC. Not only had I never heard of this “scholars’ conference,” but it would be taking place on the complete opposite end of the country. My attendance would be doubtful.

After returning from Pasadena to Seattle, where I reside, I discussed the idea of flying to New York with my wife. As it turned out, she had wanted to visit an aunt living in the upper west side of Manhattan for some time. Not allowing our emotions to get the best of us, we left our one-year-old son with my sister and his cousins; to make up for leaving him for the first time ever, we’d make sure to get him one of those little, souvenir, NYC taxi cabs and a “I ‘heart’ NY” t-shirt.

Before the YMJSC in New York, Yachad was hosting a Shabbaton held just across the street from the Hotel. The services, that were the framework for this extended Shabbos get-together, were unlike any I had ever experienced in our movement; they were an eclectic blend—innovative and traditional at the same time. Those who attended the event were a diverse group of open-minded and inviting people. When it came time for the YMJSC, I was spiritually charged and ready to hear papers delivered by new friends. I learned about everything from “painting the Amidah,” to 3rd and 4th Enoch!

This year, the 2007 YMJSC, with its preparatory shabbaton, were held in Beverly Hills. You can be sure I made the flight out. Now as a veteran “Yachad-nik”, it was not only an opportunity to pray with kavanah, gain amazing insights into the thoughts and ideas of those participating in our movement, and meet new people, but a chance to re-establish friendships and see familiar faces. I’m hooked.

See you next year!
